If you have decided to join the ranks of the tattooed, you might be at a loss as to where to find a new artist. Should you simply pick one at random from the phone book? Heavens no. This tattoo will be with you for the rest of your life, and you will want to make sure that the person who applies it has your complete faith as an artist to capture what you want in a tattoo.
One way to find a new tattoo artist is simply to talk to people who have tattoos. Chances are, you have friends, family or co-workers who have ink somewhere on their bodies. Ask them about their tattoos - where did they go? How much did it cost? Were they comfortable with the artist? Remember, though, that just because one person likes one artist, it doesn't mean that they are the artist for you. You wouldn't ask Jackson Pollock to paint your portrait - similarly, an artist who specializes in new-school graffiti style would not be well suited to your traditional Celtic knot idea.
Next, go to see some shops. Don't be intimidated by the too-cool atmosphere - this is a place of business, and you are considering using their services. Most reputable shops will have large books of portfolio work for their artists - everything from sketches to paintings to photos of completed tattoos. Flip through these, and look for styles that mesh with what you are looking for.
Finally, never pick the cheapest option just because it's the cheapest option. If the artist you like happens to charge less than others, good for you. But choosing an artist based solely on price is like choosing a car based solely on color. You have no idea what you're getting
